Getting to know our new TAPAS project “Caleb Center for autistic children” was the goal of this prospecting trip. Together with Reninka De Koker, responsible for the Internationalization of Occupational Therapy at the Odisee University of Applied Sciences occupational therapy training, we planned a first working visit to the project from TAPAS in order to provide the necessary practical information to our future students and volunteers who would do an internship or work there.

We also had the sponsorship money from the primary school “De Twijg Wijgmaal” that we personally wanted to deliver this year, so as not to lose too much in official taxes from the local government or transaction costs from the Bank. 

We participated in the activities on site to be able to form an idea of the needs on a therapeutic, pedagogical and financial level.

In addition to actually participating in the activities offered for a few days and offering some self-organized activities, we also had the opportunity to visit some schools with a “special unit” for children with disabilities, both in Kabwe and in Lusaka, where we also stayed for a week.

We also visited a workshop where they made wooden stools,  custom chairs and standing tables from Cardboard, making everything financial affordable for the local population.

We made contact and visited the Nkrumah University Kabwe and the APEC university Lusaka where we took a first step with the Special Education and Physiotherapy course to build a partnership with the Odisee University Brussels and set up something together for our Caleb Center in Kabwe in the future. Occupational therapy in Zambia is only an optional course within the Physiotherapy training (APEC Lusaka) but has the ambition to build a full occupational therapy education curriculum  here in the near future.

Caleb Center, led by Nellie Tembo, hopes to move to their new location by January 2024, where many new possibilities can be expanded.

We were also pleased to be able to formulate some advice here for the new master plan of this institution, which would have more opportunities, also from the Zambian government.

We made good friends with Nellie (Caleb center Kabwe), Mary (Kabwe special education) and Victoria (Special Education Lusaka). These will be our permanent contacts in Zambia to whom we can entrust our volunteers and students. Many thanks to them in advance.

All in all a fruitful, amazing and very useful visit for a start of TAPAS NGO in Africa.

We are also happy to announce that Hanna (master occupational therapy) and Karen (master physiotherapy) will leave for the Caleb center for two months at the beginning of September to work from the TAPAS NGO. We are delighted to be able to give them a lot of practical information and tips for their time there and wish them every success.

Ons nieuw TAPAS project “Caleb Center for autistic children” beter leren kennen was het doel van deze prospectiereis. Samen met Reninka De Koker, verantwoordelijke Internationalisering Ergotherapie  van de Odisee hogeschool opleiding ergotherapie,  planden we vanuit TAPAS een eerste werkbezoek aan het project teneinde de nodige praktische informatie te kunnen bezorgen aan onze toekomstige studenten en vrijwilligers die er zouden stage lopen of meewerken.

Ook hadden we het sponsorgeld mee van de basisschool “De Twijg Wijgmaal” dat we dit jaar persoonlijk wouden gaan bezorgen kwestie van hier niet teveel te verliezen aan officiele taksen vanuit de plaatselijke overheid of transactiekosten vanuit de Bank.

We deden mee aan de activiteiten ter plaatse om ons zelf een idee te kunnen vormen van de noden zowel op therapeutisch, pedagogisch als financieel vlak.

Naast enkele dagen daadwerkelijk meedraaien met de aangeboden activiteiten en het aanbieden van enkele zelf  georganiseerde activiteiten hadden we ook de gelegenheid om enkele scholen met “special unit” voor kinderen met beperkingen te bezoeken, en dit zowel in Kabwe als in Lusaka, waar we eveneens een week vertoefden.

We hielden ook een bezoek aan een atelier waar men zowel krukken in hout,  aangepaste stoelen als staantafels maakte van Karton kwestie van alles wat betaalbaar te maken voor de plaatselijke bevolking.

We maakten contact en bezochten de Nkrumah University Kabwe en de APEC university Lusaka waar we met de opleiding Special Education en Kinesitherapie een eerste stap deden om met de Odisee University Brussels een partnership op te bouwen om samen voor ons Caleb Center te Kabwe iets op te zetten in de toekomst. Ergotherapie in Zambia is nog maar enkel een optionele cursus binnen de Kinesitherapie opleiding (APEC Lusaka) maar heeft de ambitie hier een volwaardige opleiding ergotherapie op te bouwen in de nabije toekomst.

Caleb Center onder leiding van Nellie Tembo hoopt tegen januari 2024 te kunnen verhuizen naar hun nieuwe locatie waar heel wat nieuwe mogelijkheden kunnen worden uitgebouwd.

We waren blij hier ook wat adviezen te kunnen formuleren voor het nieuwe masterplan van deze instelling die meer mogeljkheden zou krijgen ook vanuit het Zambiaanse gouvernement.

We maakten goede vrienden met Nellie (Caleb center Kabwe), Mary  (Kabwe special education) en Victoria (Special Education Lusaka). Dit worden onze vaste contactpersonen in Zambia waar we onze vrijwilligers en studenten kunnen aan toevertrouwen. Heel veel dank aan hen van onzentwege alvast.

Al bij al een vruchtbaar, verbazend en zeer nuttig bezoek voor een start van TAPAS ngo in Afrika.

We zijn ook blij nu al te kunnen aankondigen dat Hanna (master ergotherapie) en Karen (master kinesitherapie) begin september voor twee maand naar het Caleb center vertrekken om er te werken vanuit de TAPAS ngo. We zijn verheugd hen heel wat praktische informatie en tips te kunnen meegeven voor hun tijd daar en wensen hen heel wat succes.
