For my final internship in the occupational therapy course at Odisee University of Applied Sciences Brussels, I did a seven-week internship at the Fedasil Machelen asylum centre. It was a unique opportunity to gain experience in a very diverse and dynamic environment, where no two days were the same. What made this internship extra special was the collaboration with Barbara, a French-speaking occupational therapy student from Da Vinci University of Applied Sciences Brussels. It was the first time that two students from different colleges and language communities worked together within this center. We learned a lot from each other’s approach and perspective, and complemented each other.
During the internship, we worked on a joint project in which we organized weekly activities for the residents. The focus was on relaxation and creating a safe place where people could be themselves. We tried to alternate as much as possible between sports, games, group activities and creative assignments. The activities created spontaneous conversations and connections — even if we didn’t always speak the same language.
What I remember most is how open and warm the residents often were. Despite their difficult situation, there were many moments of gratitude and humor. We met people from countless countries and cultures, and each day brought new stories, insights and encounters.
Working in this context taught me to be flexible, to constantly adapt my approach to the situation, and to constantly look for how you can make a difference as an occupational therapist, but also just as a human being — sometimes with something small, a listening ear or a simple gesture.
This internship was much more than a teaching assignment for me. It was an enriching experience that taught me a lot. I am grateful for the opportunities I was given and for all the people I was able to meet and learn from.
Thanks a lot Louis and Barbara for this great contribution to our TAPAS project Fedasil Machelen (Belgium).
